Robert E. Newman - "Bee" 72 of Lawrence, KS died on April 13, 2016 in his home from a long illness. Bee was born on September 28, 1943 in Lawrence, KS to William Edward Newman and Ella Edessa Thompson. Bee was the oldest of 6 children. Bee graduated from Lawrence High School in 1961. He enjoyed sports especially track and football. During his lifetime, he bowled a 278 and won the Boxing Golden Glove in Lawrence in 1966. Bee played Bingo and enjoyed traveling. Bee remembers fondly setting up bowling pins for Wilt Chamberlin and carrying the Heisman Trophy for Johnny Rodgers at the Holiday Inn in Omaha, NE. Bee also recalled working with Mike Amyx, a good friend since childhood at Gibson's in 1971 as a highlight of his life.
Bee married Gloria on January 23, 1983 and had three daughters of whom he was very proud. Bee said that he enjoyed being "Mr. Mom" when Gloria went back to school to get her bachelor's and master's degrees. Bee often commented on how proud he was of the levels of education his wife and daughters achieved. Bee worked in many different positions including as a taxi driver and a carnival worker. Bee's longest employment was doing shift work with Farmland Industries from which he retired on June 1, 2001.
Bee is survived by his wife: Gloria, his daughters: Ella (Newman) Beurman, (Oskloosa, KS); Christy (Eisele) Braile, (Blue Springs, MO) and Jennifer Eisele, (Topeka, KS). Eleven grandchildren; two sisters: Jackie Newman (Kansas City), and Barbara Mumford (Lawrence, KS), two brothers: Bill Newman (Yolonda) and Brian Newman both (Lawrence, KS).
