Condolence: Mattie was my dear friend and the perfect example of the Bible reference to 'cast your bread upon the waters'. She sustained me in life and the lessons and kindness she gave me will continue to sustain me. She was one of a kind.

Condolence: Mattie was a special person in my family's life. She was an assistant cook at the Delta Gamma house when my mother was in the chapter and then she was my cook for my 4 years while living in the sorority house. Mattie and I would talk about sewing when we saw each other in later years. I was proud to be part of her initiation ceremony into Delta Gamma. Mattie was an integral part of the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Gamma.

Condolence: To the family of Mrs Johnson. I would like to offer condolences to you all. Mrs Johnson was a true fiend and wonderful classy lady. I unfortunately I never had the pleasure to actually taste her cinnamon rolls but just hearing about them made my mouth water. Odell, Wilma and Richard hold onto God’s unchanging hand and May you find comfort in His love during this time of sorrow. God bless you all.

Condolence: My condolences are with Mattie's family and friends. I lived in the DG house from 1973 to 1976 and Mattie was always fun to be around. Her cinnamon rolls were the best (as good as my grandmother's). I am so happy Mattie was initiated as a DG. I know that meant the world to her. Again, my prayers and thoughts are with her family and friends.

Condolence: I had the honor and the privilege of knowing Mattie during my years (1971 - 1975) at Washburn University while living in the Delta Gamma house. Mattie was AMAZING! To this day, her cinnamon rolls have been the very best I've ever tasted! I will carry my very fond memories of Mattie in my heart always. RIP Mattie, you were truly a wonderful lady!

Condolence: To Mattie's family, my deepest condolences and prayers for love and peace to you as you grieve. Mattie was very special, beautiful and talented. Gifted with young people - I would tell her my worries and fears, and she would turn them to laughs and relief. Legendary cinnamon rolls and chili - but mostly her sweet heart.

Condolence: I never lived in the house during my college years, as I was a "Townie", but, I spent as much time as possible at the DG house and in Mattie's kitchen. She was always ready to listen and gave advice when asked. I loved being around her, even when she hadn't baked cinnamon rolls! Rest in peace dear friend and sister.

Condolence: I was one of the early Delta Gammas who prospered at Washburn and in the Delta Gamma House because of Mattie's excellent meals and Mother Butler, our Housemother. I was at the House from the fall of 1958 trough my graduation in 1961 so Mattie gave me a lot of sustenance as well as advice and humorous good times. I have always remembered Mattie and am sad at her passing. To her family, I thank you for sharing Mattie with us.

Condolence: I was Mattie's 'houseboy' at the DG house for 1966 and 1967. Mattie and I would do the dishes and then often we would just sit in the kitchen and talk. It was common that I did not want to leave. She was such a fun person to work with and I just loved her. My condolences to the family and all who knew and loved her.

I am so thankful to have had the blessing of knowing Maddie! I must also say I’m thankful to have had the blessing of enjoying her cooking and baking! I loved Maddie and felt like she was one of the best parts of being a Delta Gamma!

Condolence: Heaven has gained a special Angel. Mattie Mae could cook with the best of them. She was always the voice-of-reason who had a terrific sense of humor and a no-nonsense approach to life. How lucky we all were to have had her in the DG house. Love and prayers to her family.

Condolence: Mattie made such a difference in so many lives. She was famous not just at the DG house but other campus houses as well. Everyone knew about her cinnamon rolls of course, but many also knew she cared fiercely for those she loved and considers herself as a momma to a good many students. Heaven has no sea what they’ve gained, but they’re about to find out. Rest In Peace Mattie and May God wrap His loving arms around your family as they grieve this tremendous loss in their lives. Thank you for your service to students at Washburn.

Condolence: Mattie is a treasure that will live on forever in our hearts! She meant the world to her Delta Gamma sisters more than words can ever express. Thank you to her family for sharing her with us throughout the decades. I think of her every single time I'm by the sweet potatoes at Dillons and I know I will always picture her standing there in her DG hat and sweatshirt with the sweetest smile on her face excited to chat for a moment. You will be missed, Mattie!

Condolence: To Mattie's family, thank you for sharing Mattie with us for over 50 years. She was a huge part of our sisterhood from the time she cooked for us when we were in the DG house and all these years afterwards as our friend and sister. Her cinnamon rolls were famous and you could count on her sharing them with us for many occasions. When my husband died 10 years ago she was the first to arrive with two pans of them for my family. There was lots of love baked into those cinnamon rolls and I'll never forget our Dear Mattie.

Condolence From: Jenifer Holderman
Condolence: I believe people enter our life at a time when we need them the most. Mattie was that person for me in college. She reminded me of my values when they were misplaced, kicked me out of the kitchen when I needed to go to class, and played the role of my biggest cheerleader. Seeing her over the years was always a joy - I loved the fact she never changed and started most sentences with.... "Girl..." I never said it enough, but thanks Mattie. Thank you for teaching me to cook, and supporting me through the fun times and the not so fun times. Thank you for all the hugs. Thanks for being an original, for your friendship and your Delta Gamma sisterhood.

Condolence From: Niki McDowell
Condolence: Mattie was so many things. She was the surrogate mom to get us thru that tough time of leaving home. She was the friend to share a piece of juicy gossip. She was the kick in the pants when you were headed down the wrong road. It had been 20+ years since I saw Mattie at Founder's Day honoring her officially becoming a DG sister. When she grabbed my hands, the memories of her warmth came flooding back. Oh, what she could do with her hands. Of course she could cook & craft, but what I loved the most was when she would grab your hands to talk to you. She was going to tell you something important & you were going to focus on it! Heaven gained quite an angel!

Condolence: Mattie loved us all well - her encouragement and all around good nature helped us navigate through joy, happiness, heartache, and sorrow. She was there when we struggled with life decisions and celebrated our success. So very glad we were able to honor her several years ago. Her love for a bunch of DGs will live on. Blessings and comfort to her family. Thank you for sharing your treasure with us.
