Connie Johnson, 79, passed away on November 14, 2018 at the Midland Care Hospice in Topeka, Kansas. He was the widower of Maudie E. Johnson. They shared several years of marriage before her passing in May, 2018.
He was born to his loving mother, Ruby Hemphill, in Huntsville, Texas on June 25, 1939. He graduated from Sam Houston High School in Huntsville, Texas in 1958. After working several years at Sam Houston State University, he enlisted in the US Army and was honorably discharged. He was then successfully recruited and enlisted in the US Air Force. After being honorably discharged, he settled in Topeka, Kansas where he met and married Maudie and accepted employment with the US Postal Service.
He was an active community worker. He was also a throat cancer survivor and with the aid of his voice prosthesis he passionately delivered speeches to students about the destructive nature of cigarette smoking. He attended church regularly. His most recent church affiliation has been with New Hope Community Baptist, of which he was a member.
He was preceded in death by his oldest sister, Mary Frances Hightower of Huntsville, Texas.
He is survived by a brother, James (JoAnn) of Houston, Texas, two sisters, Betty Washington of Huntsville, Texas, Linda (Fred) Hisey of Houston, Texas, and several nieces and nephews.
