Obituary for Charles Edward Newman

Charles E. Newman, 83 passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018. He was born on November 16, 1934 in Lawrence, Kansas to Verner L. Newman Jr. and Gazelle R. Newman. He married Sherniece E. Howard on April 02, 1960. They raised six children, Roxanne Huggins, Denice M. West, Charles Derrick Newman, Patrice J. Newman, Warren E. Newman and Patrick T. Newman.

Charles was a veteran of the United State Navy. He retired from the University of Kansas in 2000. Prior to his retirement he was the Equipment Manager for the KU Athletic Department. He was blessed with many talents and enjoyed playing the violin, writing, dancing and singing. His faith was strong. He was Emeritus Trustee at St. James A.M.E., participated in his church choir, conference choir and the Martin Luther King Community Choir. He played for the Negro Basketball League the Promoters, played softball, baseball and ran track and field. At the age of 75 he won a medal at the Senior Olympics in long jump and the 50 yard dash, which allowed him to qualify for the nationals.

He took much pride in being a student at Liberty Memorial High School. His passion was mentoring and coaching young people in the surrounding areas. He coached 40 plus years for the Lawrence Youth Football Cougars. Because of his dedication to this program, an outstanding coach is awarded the Charles "Chuck" E. Newman trophy each year.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Sherniece, his parents, sister Helen Marie Smith; in-laws Alfred and Dorothy Howard, Alfred "Butch" and Brenda Howard, Robert Howard, Eugene Howard and Richard L. Smith; one daughter, Roxanne Huggins; one grandson, Christopher M. Fannin and one great granddaughter Mia Lax.

He is survived by daughters, Denice and Patrice; sons, Derrick, Warren (Jannice), and Patrick (Kelly); 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren , sister Charleen (Larry) Coleman; brother, Verner L. (Kathryn) Newman III; brother-in-law, Phillip Howard; sister-in-law Lori Howard and a host of other relatives and friends.
