Obituary for Bertha Mae Demby (Barfield)

Bertha Mae Demby passed away, at the age of 86, in Lawrence, Kansas on Sunday, August 19, 2018. Bertha was born on October 27, 1931 in Kemper Springs, Mississippi to John and Bertha Barfield. She was united in holy matrimony with Richard James Demby on December 21, 1949. They were married for 61 years and nine children were born to this union.

Bertha Demby was a member of The Church of God in Hollandale, MS until 1969. She and her family relocated to Lawrence, KS and Bertha joined C&B Temple Pentecostal Church, under the leadership of Pastor Alonzo Davis, Jr.

Bertha worked and retired as a CNA/CMA from Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. She enjoyed hosting and spending time with family and friends. Her greatest joy were times spent with her children and grandchildren.

Bertha and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Fulton, checked in daily for the latest soap opera update. Her other guilty pleasure was the WWE…yep, wrestling. Most of all, Bertha loved to laugh and never left the house without her red lipstick.

Bertha is preceded in death by her husband: Richard “Buddy” Demby, son: Jan “Charles"
Demby and grandson: Richard Demby. Also at rest are four brothers: Jack Phillips, Johnny Mosely, Horace Phillips and Willie Burton and four sisters: Sara McNeil, Lucille Parker, Irene Temple and Eloise Blake.

Bertha Demby will be fondly remembered by one brother-in-law: Samuel (Florence) Demby, (Raymond, MS); four sisters-in-law, Scnelda Phillips (Meridian, MS), Phyllis Fulton (Lawrence, KS), Lessie Mae Rhodes (Hollandale, MS) and Gladys Demby (Lincoln, NE).
