Obituary for Delbert Ray Benton Sr.

Delbert Ray  Benton Sr.
Delbert Ray Benton Sr. was born the only son of Cartress Benton and Marguerite Waters Benton on February 05, 1948 in Topeka, Kansas.

A lifelong resident of Topeka, Kansas, Mr. Benton graduated from Topeka High and attended two years at Washburn University. Delbert joined the army at the prime age of eighteen and served in the Vietnam War. He received several medals and awards while serving the country. Living a vibrant life and personality, Delbert loved bowling, playing pool, fishing, playing dominos, playing video games and he especially loved KU Basketball. While he enjoyed his pastimes, he loved the Lord and his church, Mount Olive Primitive Baptist Church. He sang in the choir, was a member in the Brotherhood men’s group and served as a treasurer and trustee. Mr. Benton also believed in working hard. He was employed with the Veterans Administrative Hospital and served as the Union President, retiring after 30 years of employment.

His treasure was his family. Mr. Benton became a father in his union with Lois Taylor, to which three children were born, Delbert Jr., Steven and Jacquelyn. In his union with Janice Jones, he had another son, Darnell, where he also became stepfather to Salatha and Barry. His last son was born to his union with Robin Schooler. He also gained another stepdaughter, Julie.

Delbert inherited his wings to the Heavens above on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the age of 69. He was preceded in death by his father, Cartress Benton; his mother, Marguerite Waters Benton and two sisters, Diana Kay Benton-Mounger and Darcelene King.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Delbert Benton Jr. (Beaumont, TX), Steven (Da'Renda) Benton Sr. (Beaumont, TX), Darnell (Michelle) Benton (Wichita, KS), Adam (Jennifer) Benton (Topeka, KS); his daughter, Jacquelyn (Anthony) Tompkins (Beaumont, TX); one sister, Donna Bryant (Irving, TX); eleven grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; three stepchildren, Salatha Jones (North KCMO), Barry (Narrisa) Jones (North KCMO), Julie Lane (Topeka, KS), five step grandchildren and one step great-granddaughter.
