Obituary for Ima Jean Oden (Clardy)

Ima Jean  Oden (Clardy)
Ima Jean Oden went to be with our Lord on Saturday, June 24th, peacefully in her sleep.

Ima Jean was born on July 2, 1936, in Topeka, Ks to Arthur E. and Mary J. (Thurman) Clardy.
She was a life-long Topekan and attended Topeka Public Schools.

After graduating from Topeka High School in 1954, she attended Washburn University Nursing School for one year, resigning to pursue a secretarial career. She was employed as a secretary to Elisha Scott of the law firm Scott, Scott, and Jackson, who were attorneys for the plaintiffs in the historical case of Brown vs. the Topeka Board of Education. She was later employed as an executive secretary at Fleming Foods Company; a division secretary at Topeka West High School; a Kansas legislative secretary to a senator; and as a Secretary III at the International Center at Washburn University, from which she retired in 1999.

Ima Jean was a life-long member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she served as church secretary, condolence clerk, and secretary for the senior usher board. She was a member of Deborah Circle, an auxiliary of the general mission department.

She was also active in her community as a member of several organizations; the Topeka Back Home Reunion, the N.A.A.C.P., the Topeka Back Republican’s Council, Oak Leaf Art and Charity Club, the Kansas Association of Colored Women, National Federation of Republican Women, International Center of Topeka, St. John Church Bowling League, Fleming Foods Kagglers Bowling Team, and Washburn University Alumni Association. She served as a precinct committee woman and as a corresponding secretary for the Topeka City Mission Union.

Ima Jean was married to her surviving husband, Don Oden, on August 17, 1957. She is also survived by her daughter, Cynthia G. Dulan and son, Don C. Oden. She has 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her mother and father, Arthur and Mary Clardy, two sisters, Frances McClelland and Helen Jackson, brother, Fred Clardy, nephew, Issac Perry Lee Jr., and infant son, Scott MacArthur Oden.
