Obituary for Sherman Coleman Sr.

Mr. Sherman Coleman, 73, passed away on May 14, 2017 in Topeka, Kansas. Sherman was born on March 24, 1944 to his father, Johnnie Coleman, and his mother, Louise Jones Tremble.

Sherman was born and raised in Topeka, where he attended and graduated from the Topeka Public Schools. From the time of a young boy, Sherman was a lover of sports. He was a tremendous athlete - playing football, basketball, and baseball to mention a few. Baseball had a special tug on him. It was said ‘he pitched so hard, he could drive the ball through a brick wall.’ This would catch the attention of the Major League Baseball Association. Sherman was drafted by the famed New York Yankees but was unable to play due to a health issue. He also was known as a “pool shark”. He was nearly unbeatable with his talents on the table, loving every second he spent shooting. While Mr. Coleman maintained a life of passion and hobbies, he also allowed his soul to shine. He loved people - never meeting a stranger. He especially loved children and they loved him back. Sherman always reached in his pocket and gave children money freely.

Later in life, Sherman became an entrepreneur, owning and operating a janitorial service. Sherman believed in his work and in people. He made it a point to go out of his way to help others. Most admirable, he practiced his benevolence quiet and discreetly, without any fanfare. If Sherman would want you to take anything from his life, he would want you to live, laugh and give generously and genuinely to mankind.

Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Sherman Coleman, Jr. (Topeka, KS) and Shermarion Coleman (Kansas City, KS); brothers, Tommy (Theodora) Coleman (South Carolina), Jerome Anderson (Topeka, KS), Curtis Anderson (Topeka, KS); his sister, Charlotte Akins (Topeka, KS); one grandson and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Johnnie Coleman; mother, Louise Jones Tremble; brother, Jackie C. Anderson and sister, Sandra K. Anderson.
