Mary Arzell Newman Blackwell was born the daughter of Arthur A. and Hazel F. Newman on January 25, 1929 in Topeka, Kansas.

She was a resident of Topeka all her life attending Buchanan Elementary, Boswell Junior High, Topeka High School and Washburn University.

Sixty-eight years ago this past November, she was wed in holy matrimony to her high school sweetheart, Irvin M. Blackwell. Together they had 6 children, Ellen Kay, deceased (Bill) Stewart; Charles Albert Blackwell, deceased, Joyce Elizabeth (David, deceased) Pettie, Judith Manette (Donald) Revely, Stewart Mitchell Blackwell (deceased), and Jennofficifer Deon (Clifford) Littleton.

Mary was baptized as an infant and accepted Christ as her Savior at St. John A.M.E. Church where she was a member all her life. At St. John she served as the organist for over fifty years, was a member of the Steward Board, sang in the choir, was office administrator, church historian, and active in other organizations.

Mary was employed by Topeka Public Schools as a kindergarten assistant and office administrator for Grant and Highland Park North Elementary Schools for many years.

Mary received her reward of eternal rest on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the age of 88. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Hazel Newman; sisters, Ann Newman and Kathryn George; brother, George Newman; sons, Charles and Stewart Blackwell; daughter, Ellen Kay Stewart; grandson, Daniel (Lisa) Christopher; granddaughter, Schnette (Ivan) Hollins and son-in-law, David Pettie.

Mary is survived by one brother, Stewart A. Newman of Marblehead, Massachusetts.

She leaves to cherish her memory, three daughters, seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
