Obituary for Sandra Kaye Lucas (Brown)

Sandra Kaye Lucas (Brown)
The sun rose on the life Sandra Kaye Brown (affectionately known to most as Sandy) on April 4, 1944 in Great Bend, Kansas. She was born to Floyd L. Brown and Alfreeda Corrine Miller Brown.

The Brown family relocated to Manhattan, Kansas and then to Topeka, Kansas where Sandra received her formal education in the Topeka Public School system. Sandra graduated from Topeka High School, Class of 1962. During school Sandy learned to play the piano and violin.

Sandra accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age; it was then that her love for music led to her calling in the music ministry. She loved to play the piano and over the years played for the following churches: Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church, Emporia, Kansas, St. Mark A.M.E. Church, Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and Lane Chapel C.M. E. Church all in Topeka, Kansas and played for whomever needed her. Sandra was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.

Sandra worked for the Kansas Neurological Institute (KNI) after high school. She later changed her career and began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in the early seventies. At Southwestern Bell she was promoted to Manager of Operator Services and held other positions within that department until she retired in 1995. She was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers. After retirement, she remained active and volunteered her services as the receptionist for the Antioch Family Life Center when it was established in 1996. She loved her work as the receptionist and her personal mission, “If I can help somebody, as I travel along; If I can help somebody, with a word or song: If I can help somebody, from doing wrong; No, my living shall not be in vain”. She worked until her health began to fail her.

One of her favorite passages was Psalm 23 and favorite song," A Hiding Place" by The New Jersey Mass Choir. She was a loving daughter, mother and sister who loved spending time with her family. While in dialysis treatment Sandy was known by the staff for her beautiful fingernail designs and they looked forward to her nail designs changing.

She entered eternal peace on Thursday, November 10, 2016 in Waco, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Trevonte Williams-Lucas.

Sandra leaves her memories to be cherished by her children, Stephanie (Randy) Glass, Topeka, Kansas, Staci (Renaldo) Davis, Waco, Texas, Dannielle Lucas, Greenwood, Mississippi and Jordan Lucas, Topeka, Kansas; brothers, Lawrence (Ruby) Brown and Stephen Brown both of Topeka, Kansas; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; godson, Travis (Rosanne) Jenkins, Topeka, Kansas and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
