Derek L'Von  Barnes
Derek L’Von Barnes, 52, was born on December 30, 1962, in Topeka, Kansas the son of Lester James Wilson and Rhetta Doreen Douglas Barnes.

Derek attended Topeka Public Schools graduating from Topeka High School. After high school he entered the United State Army. At the time of his death he was employed by Factory Motor Parts for four years.

Derek was married to the former Janelle Wilson. From this union two daughters were born.

Derek was the ultimate Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Lakers fan. His favorite colors were black and silver and orange and silver. He also enjoyed many hobbies: playing pool, sports, dancing, and swimming. He was always the entertainer. While growing up in Tennessee town Derek was part of the “Dirt Pit.”

Derek accepted Christ at an early age. At the time of his passing Derek had been attending Asbury Mt. Olive Community Church.

Derek was a devoted father to Bry’Onna and Derekka, a loving grandfather and stepfather.

On the morning of Sunday, December 20, 2015, Derek passed away surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rhetta Doreen Gaines, grandmother, Neva Tucker and brother-in-law, George Lyons III.

Derek is survived by his daughters, Bry’Onna J. Barnes (Juanita) and Derekka L. Wilson both of Topeka, Kansas; father and stepmother, Lester James Wilson and Patricia Wilson; brothers, Larry Brown of Topeka, Kansas, Colin Brown (Brenda) of Sacramento, California, Roland Barnes of Topeka, Kansas and Douglas Barnes (Adrienn) of Ft. Worth, Texas; stepbrothers, Floyd Johnson of Brazil, Darryl Johnson (Anissa) of Austin, Texas and Bobby Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters, Jocelyn Lyons of Topeka, Kansas and Donica Mason (Michael) of Waldorf, Maryland; one granddaughter, Le’Naiya Johnson of Topeka, Kansas; one grandson, Corey Johnson Jr. of Topeka, Kansas; companion, Melissa Whitmire and her children Kaden and Navaeh of Topeka, Kansas and a host of other relatives and friends.
