Obituary for Valencia Jo Jones (McMurray)

Born on February 22, 1956, Valencia Jo Jones passed away on April 10, 2015 in Topeka, Kansas.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Elbert V. Jordan and Lucille Fay Jones Avery and her siblings, Floyd James McMurray and Toiann McMurray. Valencia received her GED before working in construction where very few black women succeeded. Valencia was the first black woman to help build Clinton Lake in Lawrence, Kansas. She later moved to Sacramento, California to earn her Journeyman License and received her union status as a Heavy Equipment Engineer.

Valencia was a beloved member of the New Beginning Baptist Church and could be found frequently contributing in the women’s meeting. Her love was like no other. She loved nothing more than being a mother to her son, grandchildren. She spoke highly of her children and grandchildren to anyone who knew them. She was truly a joy to be around. She was a lady that made you feel like family. She would make people laugh and to see her smile was a pleasure. It’s a blessing to have shared many great moments with her and even more a blessing for Valencia Jo Jones to receive the Lord’s promise.

Valencia is survived by her son, Chonte (Dusang-Creechette) Spragley; her grandchildren, Don Jay Spragley, Nevaeh Spragley, and Donte Spragley; and her siblings, Kristi Valrie (Father’s side) and Gloria (James) Kirtdoll (Mother’s side); step brothers and sisters from her father’s marriage, Charles, Sarah, Louis, Delbert Tolbert and Ella Douglas. She is also survived by many other family members and a host of friends that she knew through the years.

Services will be held at The New Beginning Baptist Church (new location), April 25th 2015 at 1:00pm. Flowers and condolences may be sent to 1329 SW 37th St, Topeka, KS 66611.

John 14:1
“1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.”

Psalms 23:1-5
“1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Thanks for Your promise Lord Jesus!
